Santa Monica Mulls Arts Plan

The Santa Monica Arts Division will hold a public meeting Thursday night as the first step in establishing a citywide cultural arts master plan, which will include public art, festivals, arts education, programming and funding.
The meeting will begin at 7:30 p.m. at the Ken Edwards Center, 1527 4th St., Santa Monica.
“We’re establishing a master plan to improve our programming for the next 10 to 20 years and to expand our resources,” said Cultural Arts Administrator Maria de Herrera, who noted that Santa Monica’s master plan “will not be as ambitious” as the five-year, $295,000 cultural master plan study recently completed by the city of Los Angeles.
Santa Monica hopes to complete its plan by June, De Herrera said. The consultant firm AMS Planning and Research has been hired to coordinate the plan, which is being guided by a volunteer steering committee.
Master plan preparation will include background research on the population and arts audiences in the area; interviews with local artists, arts groups, community and government leaders and social services; the establishment of four focus groups to determine strengths, weaknesses and goals for Santa Monica’s cultural scene and at least one additional public meeting.
Researchers will visit Santa Monica Place this weekend to question the public about their interests in the arts.
