OUTLOOK

The Oilers shared the league title with Fountain Valley last year and return one of Orange County’s top pitchers in Noffsinger. As a freshman, Noffsinger had a 0.56 earned-run average and recorded 134 strikeouts in 112 innings pitched. Noffsinger also pitched two no-hitters and hit .303 for Huntington Beach. This year, Noffsinger is likely to improve on last season’s 9-8 record with Huntington Beach’s projected improvement. “Even though we lost four starters to graduation, we have a strong nucleus returning,†Anderson said. “Our strengths are pitching, experience and speed.†Bowman, a first-team all-league choice last year, returns at catcher to make Huntington Beach’s battery one of the best in the county. Crosby is back at shortstop after earning second-team all-league honors last season. The Oilers advanced to the Southern Section 5-A quarterfinals last year and Anderson expects them to again challenge for the league title. “We should be as good, if not better, this year,†Anderson said. “We have some newcomers we need to build team unity with, but that won’t be a problem.â€
