OUTLOOK
Whiteley, who coached the Westminster varsity baseball team from 1984-86, takes over as the Lions’ softball coach this season. He steps in at a good time, because Westminster returns eight starters from last year’s 14-10 team. “We’ve got eight starters back who finished two games out of the championship last year,” Whiteley said. “We’re coming together as a team after seven consecutive seasons of being out of the playoffs.” Although the Lions will miss graduated league MVP Shelley Fuller, there’s plenty of talent back. Doty, a first-team all-league pick last year, returns after posting a 1.90 earned-run average with 48 strikeouts. Doty also hit .351, and Whiteley considers her all-around skills as a strength of the program. Also back is Ramirez, a second-team all-league choice who hit .348 last year. The infield is solid with Crissy Schenck, Cota and Ramirez. Robinett hit .382 last year and had a 3.85 ERA in a backup pitching role. The Lions will rely on speed, defense and experience.
