Downey : $2.50 Late Charge on Water Bills Gets Preliminary OK

The Downey City Council gave preliminary approval Tuesday to a $2.50 penalty for residents and businesses that do not pay their water bills on time.
Hundreds of customers of the municipal Water Department habitually pay their bills late, spokeswoman Kathy Mattingly said. The late fee would cover the estimated cost to the city each time it sends out a delinquency notice, she said.
The City Council is scheduled to give final approval to the late charge at its March 24 meeting. The city could start imposing the fees 30 days later.
