Pasadena : Schools Want Funds Back

Facing an expected $1.7-million cut in state revenues, the Board of Education has called on Gov. Pete Wilson and the Legislature to make the restoration of funding for core programs and enrollment growth a priority.
The board unanimously approved a resolution Tuesday citing district administrators’ prediction that reductions in state revenue to the district in the 1993-94 school year will require cutbacks in core programs.
A 1993-94 preliminary budget indicates district expenditures of $72.6 million with an income of $71.7 million. To make up the difference, the district will reduce its reserve account to $915,000, which is $2.2 million short of the state-required 3% reserve.
Board Vice President George Van Alstine said a 1.5% cost-of-living increase for education in Wilson’s budget only at best would replace funds received in previous years.
