TENNIS ROUNDUP : Graf Starts Slowly, Finishes Fast in Florida
Faced with no health problems, no controversies and no Monica Seles, Steffi Graf won her first tournament title of 1992.
Graf, mounting a charge at Seles to regain the No. 1 ranking she lost a year ago this week, overcame a slow start Sunday to beat Conchita Martinez, 3-6, 6-2, 6-0, in the Virginia Slims of Florida at Boca Raton.
Martinez won a set from Graf for the first time in their six matches, but Graf, hitting the ball deeper and harder after warming to the task, won 14 consecutive points early in the third set to pull away.
“This is a good start for me, because it’s only the second time I’ve played this year,†she said. “If you just keep practicing all the time, you don’t really know where you stand.â€
The victory, Graf’s first since October, was the 62nd of her career and was worth $110,000.
Magnus Larsson, coming off first-round losses in his five previous tournaments, defeated fourth-seeded Anders Jarryd, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5), in the all-Swedish final of the Copenhagen Open.
