Utah Tops SDSU Women in Regular-Season Finale
San Diego State’s women’s basketball team, after trailing by one point at halftime, dropped its season finale to Utah, 77-61, Saturday in Salt Lake City. The Aztecs (17-9, 9-4) were outscored, 46-31, in the second half. The loss by SDSU also gave the Utes (19-7, 9-4) a third-place tie with the Aztecs in the Western Athletic Conference.
Kieishsha Garnes and Falisha Wright (6-18 from the field) each had 15 points to lead the Aztecs, who shot only 38% to Utah’s 55% for the game. Castle Park alumna Christina Murguia added 12 points (on 4-13 shooting) for the Aztecs, who were also out-rebounded, 35-26. SDSU will open the WAC Tournament against fifth-place Wyoming Thursday in Salt Lake City.
BASEBALL
Former University City High pitcher Mike Saipe barely missed a shutout in the University of San Diego’s 3-1 victory over the University of San Francisco at Cunningham Stadium. Saipe, a true freshmen, threw a four-hitter, striking out six, and allowed the run in the seventh inning. The Toreros improved to 7-13. USF is 5-13.
SOFTBALL
UC San Diego shut down Cal Baptist in a doubleheader, 7-0 and 8-0. Teri Zuniga went four for four, driving in three runs in the first game and was six for seven for the day.
