Randall assisted with the Herald baseball team three seasons, when Whittier Christian was fairly competitive in the Olympic League. But what happens when they hand him the reigns? The team has only one returning player, that’s what. “We are just going to be a young team,†Randall said. “We have the athletes but not the experience.†Borders, a hard-throwing left-hander and the only girl playing in the league, is the lone returning starter. Hoffman, who was with the varsity the first half of last season before finishing on the junior varsity squad, is the other. “All other players on the team last year were seniors,†Randall said. In attempting to regroup, Randall said the Heralds would rely more on aggressive baserunning than in previous years. “We are going to become more of a speed team,†he said. The catcher will be Bloom, according to Randall, threw out about 40% of the runners attempting to steal on him last season on junior varsity. As in most of the private schools, where enrollments are small and athletes often are at a premium, Randall will try to dip into the football and basketball teams for additional bodies. “Aaron Meschuk (a standout running back on the football team) hasn’t played baseball in a while, but he’s coming out and he’ll probably make the team,†Randall said.
