Stand By Barely Misses Track Record
Stand By, driven by Los Alamitos leader Steve Warrington, missed the track record for mares by one-fifth of a second while winning the $12,000 Filly and Mare Invitational by a nose over Cool Charm Girl in 1:55.
The track record of 1:54 4/5 was set by Cool Charm Girl in 1990 and equaled last year by Bag A Few. It was the fourth straight victory for Stand By, with three of them coming in invitationals.
The victory pushed Stand By’s 1992 record to five victories in six starts with earnings of over $32,000 for the 6-year-old Jamie Hanover mare from New Zealand, owned by Robert and Loretta Staats of Los Angeles and trained by Bob Gordon.
