GYMNASTICS : Top Competitors Will Take Part in UCLA Meet
Many of the nation’s top college athletes will compete tonight in the UCLA Gymnastics Invitational at Pauley Pavilion. The event will feature 12 teams--six men’s and six women’s--many of which are ranked in the top 20. The meet will begin at 7 p.m.
UCLA’s Scott Keswick and Chainey Umphrey, both members of the 1991 U.S. World Gymnastics team last August in Indianapolis, will be competing. Competing for the UCLA women will be freshman Kareema Marrow, who is ranked fourth nationally in the all-around competition.
Keswick, who finished 10th at the World Championships and anchored the U.S. team to a fifth-place finish, and Umphrey are strong candidates to make the U.S. Olympic team. Also competing in tonight’s meet will be Minnesota’s John Roethlisberger, who is the No. 2-ranked gymnast on the U.S. team.
Teams scheduled to compete in the men’s division are No. 5 Minnesota, No. 7 New Mexico, No. 11 Arizona State, No. 12 Illinois, No. 17 UCLA and No. 19 UC Santa Barbara.
Competing for the women will be No. 9 UCLA, No. 17 New Mexico, No. 21 Cal State Fullerton, No. 23 Washington, and unranked Minnesota and UC Santa Barbara.
