A Case of a Byte That’s Worse Than the Bark
NEW YORK — An Austin, Tex., company has a device that promises to quiet barking dogs that don’t respond to a rolled newspaper, splash of water or another traditional method of discipline.
Canine Concepts’ Silencer is an electronic training collar that a dog wears whenever barking is undesirable.
A microchip in the collar responds to barks by emitting an unpleasant, high-frequency sound that the dog can hear.
The owner hears only a chirp from the collar, indicating that it is working.
The company says the chip can detect the difference between types of barking so that the device is not triggered by the shorter, sharper barks that indicate an intruder.
The three-ounce collar, costing $49.95, operates on a single nine-volt battery.
