NOTES : Italy’s Compagnoni Hurt in Giant Slalom
Agony replaced ecstasy for Italian skier Deborah Compagnoni at Meribel Wednesday when a leg injury ended her season less than 24 hours after she had won the women’s super-giant slalom.
Compagnoni, 21, had battled back from four years of pain and injury, including knee surgery, to win the super-G, but fell in the first run of the giant slalom.
Compagnoni had dedicated Tuesday’s triumph to the doctors who had healed her.
An Italian team spokesman said that Compagnoni was almost certain to need surgery to repair torn ligaments in her left knee. He said she will not compete again this season.
