BOTH SIDES NOW: Seven years after the county and Newport Beach settled a long, bitter legal war over expansion of John Wayne Airport, both sides are going back to federal court soon--this time as a team. . . . The FAA wants to raise the altitude at which jets cut back their engines--and noise. Pilots say it’s dangerous to cut power at the current 500 feet. The city and county want court-approved noise tests at various altitudes to determine what’s acceptable.
