Andrew Blakeney; Jazz Trumpeter
Andrew (Andy) Blakeney, a member of the Legends of Jazz group that toured the United States and Europe in the 1970s, died Wednesday in Baldwin Park.
Jazz historian Floyd Levin said the trumpeter--who played briefly with King Oliver in Chicago in the early years of the century--was 93.
Blakeney had been undergoing treatment for kidney failure, Levin said.
Blakeney, whose grandparents were slaves, was born in Quitman, Miss., and moved to Chicago when he was 18.
He later came to California, where he played with Paul Howard’s Quality Serenaders and with Les Hite at the former Cotton Club in Culver City. He worked in Hawaii in the late 1930s and returned to the Los Angeles area, where he played with Kid Ory and led his own band.
He performed at the Sacramento and Monterey jazz festivals in 1974 and 1975, respectively.
