Cost of Tuition, Room and Board at Stanford Will Climb to $22,850

PALO ALTO — Citing increasing deficits and cutbacks in federal research financing, Stanford University announced that the cost of undergraduate tuition and room and board will jump 7.5% this fall to $22,850.
Tuition for the 1992-93 academic year will rise 9.5%, from $15,102 to $16,536, and room and board will go up 2.5%, from $6,160 to $6,314.
Stanford officials announced two weeks ago that students would have to bear more of the costs to avoid deep slashes in academic programs. Other cost-saving measures to help close a $43-million deficit over the next two years include larger classes for undergraduates, closing an overseas campus in Spain, cancellation of some courses and dismissal of some part-time lecturers.
Part of the deficit stems from Stanford’s loss of $22 million from the Office of Naval Research after a congressional probe charged Stanford with overbilling the government by millions of dollars over the last decade.
