NEW YORK — The opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics on CBS got a 15.9 overnight rating and a 26% share of the viewing audience. That’s a 6.5% decline from the 17 overnight rating and 40% share for the opening ceremony on ABC at Calgary in 1988.
An overnight rating is the average rating from the nation’s 25 largest markets, meaning the opening ceremony was being watched in 15.9% of all television households in those markets. The share represents only the households where television is being watched.
The opening ceremony at Calgary was televised live, but Saturday’s at Albertville, France, was shown tape-delayed.
CBS won the night, with NBC finishing second with a 10.6 rating and a 17% share for its prime-time programming. ABC was third with an 8.0 rating and a 13% share.
It was the third Saturday night victory of the season for CBS. The others were on Oct. 19 for Game 1 of the World Series and on Oct. 26 for Game 6.
