10-Year-Old Shoots Self Accidentally

ORANGE — A 10-year-old boy accidentally shot himself in the stomach Saturday afternoon with a .38-caliber handgun that belongs to his parents, police said.
The boy called 911 himself shortly after 1 p.m., despite the injury, said Lt. John Higley of the Orange Police Department.
Paramedics treated the boy, whose identity is being withheld, in his apartment in the 2000 block of North Highland Street and transported him to Western Medical Center-Santa Ana.
“I don’t think it’s life-threatening,” Higley said. “But he is in surgery at this time.”
Higley also said that the boy was left unattended by his parents.
The gun was kept by the boy’s parents in their bedroom, Higley said.
