PREP BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Bolsa Grande Beats Rancho Alamitos for First Victory
Bolsa Grande opened a 20-9 first-quarter lead and then held on to upset Rancho Alamitos, 67-64, for its first victory of the season in a Garden Grove League game Friday night at Rancho Alamitos.
Bolsa Grande (1-16, 1-8) had a 45-35 halftime lead, but Rancho Alamitos (9-9, 6-3) rallied to within 53-48 after three quarters. In the fourth quarter, Bolsa Grande maintained its lead, and Rancho Alamitos came no closer than three points.
Robert Fierro scored 20 points to lead Bolsa Grande. Chinh Bui added 17 for the Matadors. Leon Vickers led Rancho Alamitos with 14 points.
In other Garden Grove League games:
Kennedy 73, Pacifica 60--Kennedy made eight of 12 free throws in the fourth quarter to hold off Pacifica’s upset bid. Jermaine Galloway scored 26 points and had 12 rebounds to lead Kennedy (16-6, 9-0) and Patrick Kunz added 12 points and 13 rebounds.
Garden Grove 60, La Quinta 51--Cornell Archer scored 21 points, 10 in fourth quarter, for visiting Garden Grove, which outscored host La Quinta, 21-12, in the final quarter. Lloyd Bennett scored 18 points and freshman Greg Greenfield, the son of Golden West men’s basketball Coach Jim Greenfield, had 13 for La Quinta.
In Orange League boys’ basketball:
Brea-Olinda 65, Magnolia 44--Morgan Brown scored all 12 of his points in the third quarter as the Wildcats outscored the Sentinels, 21-3. Scott Hole had 13 points and Gilbert Arriola 20 assists for Brea-Olinda (10-11, 5-1).
Western 40, Valencia 37--Chris Jackson, who made only four of 14 field goals, made a game-winning three-pointer from the top of the key with two seconds left for host Western (13-6, 4-2). Jackson also made a three-pointer to give Western a 37-34 lead with 38 seconds remaining, and Valencia’s Kevin Deck tied the score, 37-37, (9-9, 2-4) with a three-pointer with 14 seconds remaining.
Adolfo Gomez had 12 points for Valencia (9-9, 2-4).
Savanna 48, Anaheim 46--Marlon Watson had 19 points and 14 rebounds to lead visiting Savanna (4-2 in league). Oscar Gomez had 16 points for Anaheim (4-16, 1-5).
In the Academy League:
St. Margaret’s 56, Liberty Christian 55--Geoff Hanzlik, St. Margaret’s sixth-man, scored a career-high 25 points, making 12 of 18 from the field, and had 15 rebounds.
St. Michael’s Prep 70, Cal Lutheran 59--Jocques Wright made 14 of 19 field goals and finished with 35 points and 12 rebounds for visiting St. Michael’s (7-9, 2-2).
In Garden Grove League girls’ basketball:
Kennedy 48, Pacifica 36--Lynly Matsumoto’s 16 points and nine rebounds helped the Fighting Irish improve to 12-6, 7-2.
Garden Grove 52, La Quinta 41--Garden Grove (9-7, 7-2) rallied from a 28-15 halftime deficit and earned the victory at La Quinta (6-12, 4-5). Garden Grove outscored La Quinta, 22-7, in the fourth quarter to pull away. Denise Lutz, Stephanie Bowers and Michol Murray each scored 10 points for Garden Grove.
Santiago 62, Los Amigos 20--Sonia Ramirez scored 15 points on five three-pointers for Santiago (8-10, 5-4). America Robledo led the Cavaliers with 17 points.
In Arrowhead League girls’ basketball:
Calvary Chapel 65, Sherman Indian 60--Sarah Younger scored six of her 10 points in the fourth quarter as the Eagles rallied for the victory at home.
