$3 Million in Matching Funds Approved
WASHINGTON — Federal election officials approved nearly $3 million in government matching funds to nine presidential candidates Thursday.
More than $1 million will go to President Bush, bringing his total matching funds so far this election cycle to $3.6 million. Challenger Patrick J. Buchanan qualified for the first time and will receive $100,000.
Arkansas Gov. Bill Clinton led the Democratic field with $821,234, for a total $1.4 million for his 1992 campaign. Nebraska Sen. Bob Kerrey was a distant second with $258,767, bringing his total to $833,363.
The Federal Election Commission certified a payment of $251,931 to Iowa Sen. Tom Harkin, bringing his total to $1.3 million. Former California Gov. Edmund G. (Jerry) Brown Jr. will get $158,122 for a total of $383,048.
Former Massachusetts Sen. Paul E. Tsongas qualified for $99,910, bringing his total to $556,444. Virginia Gov. L. Douglas Wilder, who has dropped out of the race, will receive $90,711, for a total of $289,026.
