Although school records haven’t been meticulously kept during Liberty Christian’s 15-odd seasons of varsity basketball, Rudy Sass, the Minutemen’s coach since 1982, is certain Curto’s performance last week is unmatched. Tuesday, Curto set what was believed to be the school record of 46 points in an 87-69 Academy League victory over Cal Lutheran. Saturday, he broke that record, scoring 51 points in a 112-90 victory over Glendale Adventist, tying him for the 12th-best performance in Orange County history. Curto, who was leading the county in scoring before last week, made 68.3% of his shots from the field (41 of 60) and boosted his average to 28.1 points. “He’s just been very consistent in his output,” Sass said. “It just so happens that in the last two games he just exploded.”
Other top performers:
Tom Airey, who made six three-point baskets, including the game-winner with five seconds left, in Capistrano Valley’s 63-62 victory over Irvine.
Tuan Dang, who scored nine goals in two La Quinta soccer matches, including six in an 8-0 victory over Bolsa Grande.
Chris St. Clair, who scored 28 points in Sonora’s 53-51 victory over Buena Park, which moved the Raiders into a tie for first place in the Freeway League.
Jason Saunders, who won the 103-pound weight class of the Canyon Invitational and was named the most valuable wrestler of the lower weights.
