Ex-Irvine Tennis Player Roberts Advances

Mike Roberts, a former UC Irvine standout who graduated in December and gave up his final year of collegiate eligibility to join the professional circuit, defeated Nils Koitka of Fresno State, 7-6, 6-2, Thursday in a third-round match of the Adidas Invitational Tennis Championships at Grand Champions Resort in Indian Wells.
In other third-round matches involving Orange County players, Brett Hansen-Dent of UC Irvine lost to Jose-Luis Noriega of the University of San Diego, 7-6, 3-6, 6-2, and Adam Peterson, a Mater Dei senior who has committed to USC, defaulted to Greg Anderson because of a foot injury.
The tournament winner receives a wild-card berth for the $1.1-million Newsweek Champions Cup March 2-8 at Grand Champions Resort.
