Long Beach : Council Expresses Concern Over Harbor Labor Dispute
The Long Beach City Council has adopted a resolution expressing its concern over the ongoing labor dispute at the Intermodal Container Transfer Facility (ICTF) and the potential layoff of 350 harbor workers.
About 100 workers and their families, most of whom live in Long Beach, showed up at the council’s Tuesday meeting to ask for support in their fight to keep Southern Pacific Transportation Co. from firing them next month.
The laborers work for Pacific Rail Services, which is under contract to run the container facility for Southern Pacific. But the company, citing low productivity, plans to replace the Pacific Rail employees with its own workers.
ICTF, located in Carson, moves cargo from ships by rail through the ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles.
