Some ‘Testimony’ Rings a Little False
In her wonderful review of “Native American Testimony†edited by Peter Nabakov, Constance Casey posed the idea that a film should be made about the Ponca chief Standing Bear.
Actually, a wonderful production was mounted in 1986-’87 by the Nebraska Educational Television Network. It was produced by Gean Bunge and titled “The Trial of Standing Bear.†The superb actor Ivan Naranjo (of Southern Ute and Blackfoot heritage) starred in the title role.
(Readers) might want to request from our local PBS station a reshowing of this film during the 500th anniversary of the first encounter between the native peoples of this hemisphere and Christopher Columbus.
