COLLEGE BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : No. 6 Kansas Goes Overtime, Beats Missouri

Rex Walters scored nine of his 21 points in overtime as sixth-ranked Kansas got past No. 13 Missouri, 92-80, in the teams’ Big Eight Conference opener Monday night at Columbia, Mo.

Steve Woodberry had 19 points for Kansas (12-1), which rebounded from a loss to Louisville Saturday that ended its 24-game home-court winning streak.

Woodberry and Walker each had a three-pointer in overtime, and Walters scored five consecutive points to put the Jayhawks ahead, 85-78.

Anthony Peeler had 30 points for Missouri (11-2), which lost its second game in a row after 17 victories. Peeler made two free throws with one second left in regulation to force overtime, but Missouri blew an earlier opportunity when Jevon Crudup missed two free throws with 1:08 remaining.

No. 14 North Carolina 96, Maryland 76--Hubert Davis scored 16 of his 26 points in the first half, and the Tar Heels trounced the Terrapins in an Atlantic Coast Conference game at Chapel Hill, N.C.

North Carolina, 11-2 overall and 2-1 in the ACC, was playing its third game in five days and turned the ball over four times in the first four minutes. The Tar Heels appeared sluggish coming off Saturday’s upset loss to Notre Dame in New York.

Davis came off the bench to score 10 points in a 3 1/2-minute span as the Tar Heels took a 19-9 lead, then he added six more points in a 15-3 run that helped North Carolina to a 41-31 halftime lead.

Walt Williams had 32 points for Maryland (7-7, 0-4).

No. 19 Tulane 83, New Orleans 61--Pointer Williams, a reserve freshman point guard, scored 17 points and had six steals as the Green Wave won at New Orleans.

Four of Tulane’s No. 2 unit, dubbed “the Posse†by Coach Perry Clark, scored in double figures and none of the starters did. Carlin Hartman and Kim Lewis each added 12 points for Tulane and Matt Greene had 10, all in the first half, for the Green Wave (12-0).

Ervin Johnson scored 23 points for New Orleans (11-5).

Villanova 73, No. 21 Seton Hall 68--Lance Miller sank two free throws and a jumper early in overtime and the Wildcats won a Big East Conference game at East Rutherford, N.J.

The victory was the fourth in a row for Villanova (6-6, 4-1), which ended an eight-game losing streak against the Pirates.

The Pirates (9-4, 2-3) built a 57-46 lead with 4:54 left in regulation and then gave the game away by missing 11 of 19 free throws, including six in a row in the final 1:35. Seton Hall was 19 for 37 from the line.

Miller had 26 points, including 13 free throws without a miss for Villanova, which made 32 of 37 free throws.

OTHER GAMES

Chris Leonard scored 30 points and West Virginia (9-5) beat Notre Dame (4-6), whose three-game winning streak ended, 87-67, at Morgantown, W.Va. . . . Jim McCoy scored 24 points and Massachusetts (12-3) beat Boston University, 84-82, at Boston. Dan Delgardo scored 27 points for the Terriers (4-7).
