NHL ROUNDUP : Sabres Stop Messier, Rangers, 6-3
The Buffalo Sabres know what it takes to win at home, now they have to figure out why they can’t win consistently on the road.
Even the New York Rangers posed no problem for the Sabres on their home ice Sunday night as Buffalo won, 6-3, to stretch its unbeaten home streak to eight (6-0-2).
The Sabres, who have won their last six home games, stopped Mark Messier, who is sixth in the NHL in points.
Pat LaFontaine had two goals and an assist and the other Sabre goals came from Randy Wood, Dale Hawerchuk, Alexander Mogilny and Donald Audette.
John Ogrodnick, Mike Gartner and Tim Kerr scored for the Rangers.
Pittsburgh 4, Vancouver 3--Joe Mullen, Kevin Stevens and Jaromir Jagre scored within less than four minutes of the second period at Vancouver as the Penguins rallied to end a two-game losing streak.
The Penguins, trailing by 2-1 before the three goals, also got solid goaltending from Tom Barrasso, who faced 26 shots.
Pavel Bure, Cliff Ronning and Tom Fergus scored for the Canucks, who lost for only the second time in 12 games.
The Penguins played without Mario Lemieux, their NHL scoring leader, for the fourth consecutive game because of back problems.
Philadelphia 4, N.Y. Islanders 3--Kevin Dineen scored two of his team’s four first-period goals and Mark Pederson assisted on three to lead the Flyers to their 600th home victory.
Dineen has scored twice in three out of his last four games, giving him 15 goals for the season.
Dineen opened the scoring at 6:05 when his soft slap shot got by goalie Steve Weeks. He scored again at 13:13 as he lifted the puck into the top corner off a pass from Rod Brind’Amour.
Chicago 4, Washington 2--Brent Sutter had two goals and an assist at Chicago and the Blackhawks’ special teams shut down the Capitals’ league-leading power play all seven times.
The Blackhawks limited the Capitals to two shots on their seven power plays and outshot the Capitals by 33-18 overall.
The Capitals lost a chance to take over first place in the Patrick Division.
San Jose 4, Winnipeg 3--Pat Falloon’s goal with eight seconds to play at Winnipeg lifted the Sharks to their second road victory of the season.
The Sharks, with a 2-21-1 record on the road, also had goals from Tony Hrkac, Ken Hammond and Doug Wilson.
Pat Elynuik had two goals and Phil Housley scored the other for the Jets.
