La Mesa Man Held After Leading CHP on 2-Hour Chase : Pursuit: 28-year-old reportedly tried to back his truck over San Diego police officers during flight eastward.
A 28-year-old La Mesa man is being held on $500,000 bail after allegedly trying to back his truck over San Diego police officers, then leading police and California Highway Patrol officers on a two-hour chase from San Diego to El Centro, officials said Monday.
It took six CHP officers to subdue and handcuff James Bardell, who reportedly drove his 1985 Toyota pickup truck more than 90 m.p.h.--at one point driving 2 miles on three flat tires--during the Sunday night escapade, officials said.
The chase began at 10:30 p.m. when Bardell, who was traveling east on California 94 near Euclid Avenue, failed to stop for police, said San Diego police spokesman Bill Robinson.
Bardell continued east on Interstate 8, where his white truck spun out of control, Robinson said. San Diego police officers then ran toward Bardell, who reportedly tried to back over the officers before continuing east on I-8, Robinson said.
In El Cajon, the CHP joined the pursuit, according to CHP spokesman Bob Melton.
As Bardell approached the Imperial County line, CHP officers in El Centro stepped in and placed a spike strip across the road, which apparently flattened three of Bardell’s tires.
But Bardell continued to drive for more than 2 miles on his tire rims before he was caught by six CHP officers on I-8 near Dunaway Road, Melton said.
“This is a man who attempted to strike officers with his car and refused to pull over,†Robinson said. “It’s unusual that there was no damage at all because of the length and duration of the chase.â€
Bardell is being held on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, driving with willful disregard, misdemeanor drunk driving, being under the influence of a controlled substance and driving on a revoked license, authorities said.
