POMPANO BEACH, Fla. — Three harness drivers were injured and one horse had to be destroyed after an accident Thursday night at Pompano Harness Track.
As the field turned for home in the fifth race, Bacardi, an 8-year-old pacer, injured his left front leg and fell to the ground, unseating driver Kelly Sheppard. Bijou Blue, driven by Gary Mills, became entangled and unseated Mills, who scrambled to safety under the inside rail. Flying Samadhi also collided with Bacardi’s sulky, flipping Bret Shultz over the inside rail.
The three drivers were taken to a hospital for X-rays and examination. There were no serious injuries and the drivers were being evaluated late Thursday, a hospital spokesman said.
Bacardi was destroyed, but the other horses were unhurt.
