12 Schools Represented on South Coast All-Star Team

Twelve schools are represented on The Times’ 1991 South Coast All-Star High School Football Team, led by Long Beach Wilson with four players and Long Beach Poly and Artesia High of Lakewood with three each.

The offensive player of the year is quarterback Aaron Flowers of Artesia, who ranked second in the CIF Southern Section in passing during the regular season. Aaron’s father, Norm Flowers, was named coach of the year after leading the Pioneers to an 11-1 record. Artesia was 4-6 in 1990.

The defensive player of the year is linebacker Frank Russell of Wilson, who also was a standout running back.

The all-South Coast team, based on a poll of coaches, includes wide receivers Shawn Tippet (Artesia) and Anthony Cobbs (Poly), offensive linemen Robert Gilmore (Lynwood), Mark Hernandez (St. John Bosco), Al Espinoza (Paramount), Steven Bell (Dominguez) and Dan Moreno (Wilson).

Running backs are Robert Jenkins (Dominguez), Garnett Overby (St. Anthony) and Dione Tyler (Millikan). Flowers (Artesia) is the quarterback.

The defense is led by linemen Fia Ili (Poly), Ryan Lua (Poly), Steve Ruffner (St. Anthony) and Demarco Ford (Wilson). Linebackers are Sean Estrada (Artesia), Sam Santana (Paramount), Johnny Nansen (Jordan) and Russell of Wilson.

Greg Sii (Jordan), Paul Guidry (Gahr) and Kevin McKenzie (Wilson) are the defensive backs.

Matt Reed (Lakewood) is the kicker.

The team members will be honored at a breakfast at 9 a.m. Jan. 12 at the Sheraton Cerritos Hotel.
