Santa Paula police officials warned the public Wednesday that someone claiming to be from the department is calling area residents and businesses asking for money to fight drugs.
Neither the department nor its DARE anti-drug program is seeking donations, Sgt. Gary Marshall said. The only legitimate fund raiser under way, he said, is by the Santa Paula Police Officers Assn., an employee benefit group that has scheduled a basketball tournament on Dec. 15 with the Harlem Clowns. The association is not seeking donations for any other purpose, Marshall said.
Residents who receive a suspicious solicitation should ask for the name and telephone number of the person calling, and the exact name of the group they represent, Marshall said.
