The person behind the desk smiled and said: “Welcome to Managerial Employment Services. Please, have a seat.â€

The visitor sat.

“So, how can I help you?â€

“Well, I’m looking for a managerial position.â€

“I see. Do you have any previous experience?â€

“No.â€

“OK, then let me just jot down a few facts about you.â€

“Fine.â€

“Age?â€

“Middle.â€

“Sex?â€

“Male.â€

“Race?â€

“Black.â€

“Oh, I’m terribly sorry, sir. I have no jobs for you.â€

“No jobs?â€

“No managerial positions at this time.â€

“But I heard you had several managerial openings.â€

“They’ve been filled.â€

“By whom?â€

“By . . . uh, other guys.â€

“White guys?â€

“Coincidentally, yes.â€

“Every managerial job?â€

“Yes.â€

“Every single one?â€

“Yes, but I do have some outstanding coaching opportunities here that I’m sure would interest you.â€

“Both New York jobs, both Chicago jobs already filled?â€

“I’m afraid so.â€

“Boston? Milwaukee? Seattle?â€

“I’m afraid so.â€

“Who got those jobs?â€

“Good people.â€

“Experienced people?â€

“Well . . . .â€

“People with more managerial experience than me?â€

“Uh . . . .â€

“Did the Boston job go to somebody with major league managing experience? Yes or no.â€

“No.â€

“Did Milwaukee’s?â€

“No.â€

“What about that White Sox job? That was one I wanted. Who got that?â€

“The third base coach from Pittsburgh.â€

“Who got the Mets’ job?â€

“The White Sox manager.â€

“Ah, at least they got somebody with experience. Who got the Cubs’ job?â€

“The Seattle manager.â€

“Did Montreal need a new manager?â€

“No, Montreal changed managers last season.â€

“How about California? Did the Angels need a manager?â€

“No, they hired the manager Montreal fired.â€

“I see.â€

“But you can’t say he had no experience!â€

“Guess not.â€

“Honestly, sir. There’s no conspiracy here. It’s just the way these things go.â€

“Yeah. I guess baseball teams have to hire men who have the right necessities.â€

“The what?â€

“Never mind. Private joke.â€

“Sir, you don’t honestly believe that there’s job discrimination in major league baseball?â€

“No, baseball’s made great strides the last few years.â€

“I agree.â€

“Sure. There are all those people of color in management positions now.â€

“Absolutely . . . uh, there are?â€

“Sure. And there are all those minorities in general manager jobs.â€

“There are?â€

“And in managing jobs.â€

“There are?â€

“No doubt about it. Ever since baseball set out to do something about minority hiring, we’ve seen so many revolutionary changes!â€

“We have?â€

“Sure. Major league baseball made a commitment to minority hiring, and a promise is a promise.â€

“I haven’t seen . . . .â€

“Just look at all the black managers we have in baseball now, as opposed to a few years ago. There’s . . . uh, there’s . . . .â€

“Uh . . . .â€

“I was thinking of one just the other day.â€

“Uh . . . .â€

“There’s . . . .â€

“Toronto?â€

“Yes, Toronto! Very good!â€

“Thank you.â€

“Of course, the Toronto manager only got the job because he was a coach filling in the manager’s spot until they got somebody better, and he did such a good job, they had to give it to him full time. But that’s not important.â€

“It isn’t?â€

“No! We’ve had plenty of black managers in baseball, before and since!â€

“We have?â€

“We’ve had Frank Robinson!â€

“Yes!â€

“And we’ve had . . . uh, we’ve had . . . we’ve had Frank Robinson!â€

“Right!â€

“And, well, let me see here, uh . . . the Yankees have replaced their manager 10 or 12 times . . . we must have had a black Yankee manager at some point . . . .â€

“Not that I recall.â€

“Well, no matter. The Cubs have gone through a bunch of managers . . . we must have had a black Cub manager at some point . . . .â€

“Not that I recall.â€

“But we’ve had Frank Robinson!â€

“Yes!â€

“Nobody can say we haven’t had Frank Robinson!â€

“Yes!â€

“Good day, sir.â€

“Good day!â€

“Thank you for your time.â€

“No,†said the man behind the desk, the man doing the employing. “Thank you for your patience.â€
