Knoxville Paper to Close: Tennessee’s 106-year-old Knoxville Journal will cease daily publication at year-end and all 69 employees will be laid off, the publisher announced. But Gerald Garcia said the paper will have a new beginning as a weekend publication featuring local news, entertainment and sports. The weekly will have a controlled distribution focusing on 54,000 households, he said. The afternoon Journal’s circulation in March was 40,946. Its morning rival, the Knoxville News-Sentinel, has a circulation of 104,545. The decision to close the Journal came 17 months after the News-Sentinel agreed to pay $40 million to dissolve a joint operating agreement between the papers.
