HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL SOUTHERN SECTION PLAYOFFS : Valley View’s Dotson Out; Morningside Wins, 36-9
Injured running back David Dotson of Valley View High in Moreno Valley was scratched from the starting lineup minutes before Friday night’s kickoff, and Inglewood Morningside went on to a 36-9 victory in a Southern Section Division VIII quarterfinal matchup at Coleman Field in Inglewood.
Dotson, who holds the state rushing records for season (3,523) and career (7,246) yards, gained 190 yards in a 42-20 victory over West Torrance last week, but he played sparingly in the second half after reinjuring his left hamstring.
Although Dotson was expected to play Friday night, Coach Leo Brouhard decided not to use him because he didn’t feel the hamstring was healing well.
Dotson’s backup, Kareem Booker, didn’t make the trip to Inglewood after being disciplined at school this past week. That left third-string running back David Mathis as the starter.
Mathis, a junior, gained 145 yards in 43 carries and scored one touchdown, but it was not enough.
Morningside (9-2) scored on its first three possessions and on four of its first five.
Running back Montres Gords gained 127 yards in 16 carries and scored touchdowns runs of four, one and 44 yards. Quarterback Stais Boseman rushed for 100 yards in 10 carries and one touchdown and also returned a kickoff 83 yards for a touchdown.
