UCLA defeated UC San Diego, 14-10, in the first round of the NCAA water polo championships at Belmont Plaza. UCLA will play third-seeded Pepperdine in a semifinal at 7:30 tonight.
Danny Hackett had six saves for third-seeded UCLA.
Cal, the defending champion and top-ranked team, defeated Navy, 13-6, to advance to the other semifinal against UC Irvine. Cal’s only loss in 25 matches this season was to UCLA (18-9). Irvine defeated Cal State Long Beach, 11-8.
In the fifth-place semifinals, Long Beach will play Navy at 2 p.m., and UC San Diego will play Slippery Rock.
