WORLD IN BRIEF : UNITED NATIONS : Hostage Negotiator Returns to Mideast

U.N. hostage negotiator Giandomenico Picco, who has been instrumental in recent hostage releases, has returned to the Middle East, officials at U.N. headquarters said. They would not speculate about the possible release of more Western hostages, but nearly every time Picco has lately traveled to the region, he has made progress on hostage issues. A recent Picco mission bore fruit 10 days ago with the release of American Thomas M. Sutherland and Briton Terry Waite by their Shiite Muslim captors in Lebanon.
