SIMI VALLEY : Student Paper to Resume Publication
Stop the presses! Simi Valley High School has resurrected its student newspaper.
After a three-year hiatus, the school newspaper is returning with a new name and a new staff. Thirty-four students are writing stories, taking photographs and selling ads for the Maroon Tribune, which is expected to hit campus Dec. 18.
“A lot of them don’t understand how it goes together,†said co-Managing Editor Laura Maar, 17, who helped edit her junior high school newspaper.
“It has to be a group effort,†Maar said. “That’s what we’re trying to get it to be.â€
The premiere issue will contain articles on the opening of the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library, an on-campus wedding of two teachers, recent homecoming highlights and sports.
Poetry and short stories from non-journalists are also scheduled to be printed.
Newspaper adviser Peg Morris, who also teaches crafts and ceramics, said she is leaving the content of the paper up to the students.
In the mid-1960s, students at Simi Valley High got their news from the Pony Express, which was duplicated on a ditto machine.
The school has been without a student newspaper since the Pioneer ceased publication in 1988.
