SANTA PAULA : New Way to Select Panelists Studied
The Santa Paula City Council is looking for a new way to make appointments to city panels in the wake of a recent 12-candidate race for the Planning Commission.
At a hearing this week, the council reviewed procedures used by all 10 cities in the county to determine how it should change its policy.
Presently, a subcommittee of two council members reviews applications and makes a recommendation considered by the whole council. Although 12 people had filed for the Planning Commission, the whole council only voted on one.
Some members of the council have asked that each of the five council members be permitted to bring forward a nominee.
“I would hope that in the coming years, we could go to one man, one vote,†Councilman Al Urias said.
