HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Coronado Rolls Past Mar Vista

Three-time defending San Diego Section water polo champion Coronado began its defense of its 3-A title Saturday at Mt. Carmel High School by scoring an impressive 18-8 first-round victory over Mar Vista.
Jonathon Johnson scored four goals, and Gavin Scott had three to lead the Islanders (24-4), who broke open a 4-3 lead after one quarter. Eleven players scored for the Islanders, who advanced to Tuesday’s quarterfinal play.
In other 3-A matches:
Vista 14, Patrick Henry 10--Kevin Mossbarger scored five times for Vista (12-14-1), which outscored Henry in the fourth quarter, 5-2. Brent Sorenson scored four times for Vista.
Helix 17, Mira Mesa 11--Helix led, 9-0, and coasted to victory.
Division 2-A
University City 16, Santana 11-- Craig Brown scored six times for University City (16-10), while Josh Levitt and David Chavez added three goals each.
Army-Navy 10, El Cajon Valley 8--Alex Beck scored seven goals and Jim Hallock had 13 saves for ANA (18-7), which thwarted five of 10 man-down situations.
Volleyball quarterfinals
Division I
Poway d. Vista--Allison Brady had seven kills and four blocks, and Kara Milling had eight kills as No. 2 Poway (14-2) breezed into the semifinals against Palomar League rival Mt. Carmel, 15-3, 15-6, 15-2. Keri Byrne had seven kills for Poway.
The Poway-Mt. Carmel matchup pits last year’s Division I finalists against each other. Poway is the defending champion.
Mt. Carmel d. Fallbrook--The middle blocking of Mt. Carmel gave the second-seeded Sundevils a 15-3, 15-8, 15-3 victory. Andrea Strategos led Fallbrook (6-12) with three kills.
Division II
Torrey Pines d. Mission Bay--Kami Schmedding had 15 kills as top-seeded Torrey Pines (24-5) scored a 15-1, 15-7, 15-13 victory over the Buccaneers. The match lasted 85 minutes.
Grossmont d. University City--Jolie Oliver had 13 kills and Kristie Smedsrud had 12 to lead No. 4 Grossmont (20-8) over University City (19-10).
Monte Vista d. Serra--Raimie Engelman and Mykie Evans had six aces apiece to lead No. 2 Monte Vista, 15-2, 15-6, 15-11. Evans also had four kills. Monte Vista is 26-3.
Division V
Bishop’s d. Francis Parker--Bishop’s (12-8) threw a kink into the playoffs by scoring a 9-15, 16-14, 15-13, 15-6 upset of second-seeded Francis Parker (19-9).
