May Consolidating Two Retail Chains: May Department Stores Co., based in St. Louis, is consolidating two of its East Coast chains in an attempt to save money and centralize its power base. Hecht’s department stores, based in the Washington area, will absorb the Thalhimers stores, based in Richmond, Va., on Feb. 1. May, the parent of both chains, said it will close seven Thalhimers stores by the end of January and will operate 43 stores under the name Hecht’s. Jobs will be found for 300 to 350 of Thalhimers’ 1,100 employees.
