California IN BRIEF : SAMOA : Layoffs Hit Hourly Pulp Mill Workers

Nearly 200 employees of the Louisiana-Pacific Corp. pulp mill have been laid off until at least early 1992. The 183 hourly workers have been out of work since Oct. 18, when Louisiana-Pacific shut the mill, citing a poor pulp market. Company officials had hoped at the time that the plant would be back in business in a week or two. But company spokeswoman Lois Busey said there has been no improvement in the market. ‘We just don’t anticipate a change,” Busey said.
