D.A.’s Office Looking at Initiative Fund Raiser
Dist. Atty. Ira Reiner’s office is investigating whether criminal conduct occurred at a Redondo Beach fund raiser for a sports betting initiative sponsored by Assemblyman Richard E. Floyd (D-Carson).
One question being addressed is whether donors at the Sept. 25 event--some of them allegedly bookmakers--made illegal cash contributions, Deputy Dist. Atty Gail Ehrlich said. She declined to elaborate. The California Fair Political Practices Commission had begun its own investigation of the fund raiser, but closed it last week pending the outcome of the district attorney’s inquiry, according to FPPC spokeswoman Carol Thorp.
Organizers are now gathering signatures in support of Floyd’s initiative, which would legalize sports betting throughout California.
