U.S. to Seek Expanded Trade Talks With Japan: The United States hopes to cut a trade deficit that could hit $50 billion this year and complicate President Bush’s reelection chances, according to a senior U.S. official. The U.S.-Japan trade gap has heightened tensions between the world’s most powerful economies and threatens a revival of protectionism that could imperil international trade and the fragile recoveries occurring in several countries. The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, warned that the gap could grow larger if the U.S. economy accelerates as the Administration expects.
