Fuerbringer to Play Volleyball at Stanford

Matt Fuerbringer of Estancia High School said Thursday he has made an oral commitment to play volleyball at Stanford.
Fuerbringer has been a volleyball and basketball standout for the Eagles the past two seasons. He was named first-team All-Southern Section in basketball last season, but missed a third of the volleyball season with a back injury.
He said he decided to commit to play volleyball instead of basketball because he wanted to go to Stanford. Fuerbringer was being recruited by Loyola Marymount, UC Santa Barbara, Santa Clara and the University of San Diego. Stanford was the only school recruiting him as a volleyball player.
“I didn’t pick a sport, I picked a college,” Fuerbringer said. “Stanford is the school I wanted to attend and volleyball was the way to get in there.”
Last season, Fuerbringer averaged 16.2 points and six rebounds in helping Estancia win the State Division III championship. A two-year starter, he was named the Pacific Coast League’s most valuable player last season.
Fuerbringer, who is 6 feet 6, 185 pounds, is also a two-year starter in volleyball and was named all-league each of the past two seasons.
