The California Athletic Commission was expected to pick a chief executive officer but instead reduced its list from six to three.
Still in the running are Rudy Ortega, Bay Area referee; Rob Lynch, assistant executive officer; and Richard DeCuir, assistant executive officer for the California Board of Dental Examiners.
Trimmed were Steve English, one of two assistant executive officers; former commissioner Raoul Silva and retired Air Force officer Arthur Tyler.
The commission said it would name its new officer Nov. 1 or Nov. 5.
