Athletic Director Overrules Norm Stewart
Missouri athletic director Dick Tamburo told basketball Coach Norm Stewart on Wednesday that suspended player Jamal Coleman may not practice with the team while his criminal case is pending.
Stewart had allowed Coleman to practice Tuesday in the team’s first workout for the 1991-92 season.
The senior forward was suspended from the team in April, pending the outcome of felony stealing charges that stemmed from an alleged scam involving the university bookstore. A preliminary hearing is set for Oct. 24.
“This action is consistent with how I’ve treated indiscretions committed by other student-athletes and the disciplinary actions taken by their coaches,†Tamburo said in a written statement.
Tamburo’s action frustrated Stewart, who said that he thought team discipline was within the authority of the coach.
