Charges Won’t Be Filed in Washington Portrait Case

Assistant Dist. Atty. Robert B. (Bruce) Werner has decided not to press formal charges against Christopher Francis Brown, 29, the West Los Angeles stockbroker arrested last month in connection with a stolen portrait of George Washington that police found in his parents’ San Marino home.
Brown, who police said had apparently given the painting to his parents, John C. and Elizabeth R. Brown, was arrested Sept. 9 on charges of receiving or concealing stolen property.
He was never arraigned, however. Werner said he could not press formal charges because of a three-year statute of limitations. The painting, attributed to early American painter Gilbert Stuart, was stolen in 1985 from a faculty lounge at UCLA.
