UCLA pitcher-infielder Lisa Fernandez, a two-time All-American, has been named the winner of the Honda Award as the top player in the nation in women’s college softball. She set an NCAA record with 23 consecutive pitching victories over two seasons and led the nation last season with an earned-run average of 0.25. She had a 20-3 record last season with a perfect game and three no-hitters and also had a .341 batting average.

Pepperdine Athletic Director Wayne Wright has been appointed to serve out the term of J. Dudley Pewitt on the NCAA Council. Pewitt, vice president of administration at the University of Alabama-Birmingham, recently resigned. Wright will serve through the 1992 NCAA convention and then be eligible for appointment to a four-year term.

Pepperdine basketball Coach Tom Asbury has been named the school’s 1990-91 coach of the year and Wave women’s volleyball player Lesli Asplund was selected as scholar-athlete of the year. Asbury led the Waves to their first West Coast Conference championship since 1986 last season. Asplund, who is majoring in sports medicine, has a cumulative grade-point average of 3.3.

Jim D’Angelo has retired after serving 36 years at Santa Monica College as athletic trainer, coach, counselor and administrator. D’Angelo’s last position was as dean of evening and special programs. He also served as dean of health, physical education, recreation and athletics. Sports he coached included tennis, gymnastics, football, basketball and track.

Kristy Hopkins has been named coach of Pepperdine’s women’s golf team and Suzy Favor-Hamilton has been appointed a volunteer assistant coach of cross-country at the school.

A former Pepperdine golfer and basketball player, Hopkins replaces Kerry Hopps, a professional at Woodland Hills Country Club. Hopps will remain at Pepperdine as a teaching assistant.

Favor-Hamilton, who won a record nine NCAA championships in distance running at the University of Wisconsin, expects to compete for a berth on the 1992 U.S. Olympic team.

Sherri Murrell, a former Pepperdine basketball guard, has been named an assistant coach for the Brigham Young women’s basketball team. Murrell, a two-time All-West Coast Conference selection, graduated in April.
