Blaine McCallister shot a 64 at the Texas Open on Friday to take a four-stroke lead after two rounds with a 10-under-par 130.

Four strokes back were Wayne Grady, Bob Gilder, John Cook, Brian Claar and Bill Britton.

Keith Clearwater, who led at seven under after the first round, ballooned to a two-over-par 72 at Oak Hills Country Club at San Antonio for a five-under-par 135.

McCallister birdied five holes on the front nine after beginning the day at four-under.

Weighing heavy on him were the medical problems of his fiancee, Claudia, who has a rare eye illness and was hospitalized Thursday in Jacksonville, Fla.

“She’s a tough woman, and she means a lot to me and she makes golf look secondary,†he said. “She’s tough, and she makes me tough.â€

Jim Dent, the biggest hitter among golf’s older players, shared the first-round lead of the $1.5-million Vantage Championship, the richest event on the Senior PGA Tour.

Dent scored an eagle-three on the 17th hole, drove the green on a par-four, played the par-fives four under par and did not make a bogey in his five-under-par 67 at Tanglewood at Clemmons, N.C.

“I hit 17 greens, and that’s pretty good for me,†said Dent, who was tied for the lead with Al Kelley.
