Two Suspects in a Dozen Market Robberies Seized
Two men believed to be responsible for about a dozen recent supermarket robberies in the San Gabriel Valley and Los Angeles were arrested after a holdup in Pasadena, authorities said Sunday.
Anthony Turner, 27, of Altadena, and Mitchell Boyd, 28, of Pasadena, were being held on $200,000 bail each after they were booked at the Pasadena city jail for armed robbery, said Pasadena Police Cmdr. Gary Bennett. He said the men apparently are half brothers.
Events leading up to their arrests began when police received a report of a robbery in progress about 9 p.m. Saturday at a Hughes Market in the 300 block of West Colorado Boulevard. The robber took cash and fled east on Green Street, Bennett said.
Later that evening, a sergeant on patrol spotted a red Nissan Sentra that resembled a car that had been used during another supermarket robbery at about 7:30 p.m. Saturday at a Hughes Market in the 1100 block of West Huntington Drive in Arcadia, Bennett said.
Police stopped the Nissan on Fair Oaks Avenue and took the two men into custody. A witness identified one of the men as a suspect in the robbery at the Hughes Market on West Colorado, Bennett said.
The suspects had a .45-caliber pellet pistol, an undetermined amount of cash, a police scanner radio and clothing believed to have been worn during the robberies, Bennett said.
Detectives later served a search warrant at Turner’s home, where they confiscated cash, a car and clothing, the commander said.
Investigators believe the half-brothers are responsible for at least a dozen supermarket robberies.
