CSUN Being Frugal With Supplies to Meet Athletic Cutback Demands

As expected, state budget cuts have filtered down to the Cal State Northridge athletic program. Its $4.2-million budget has been cut by $145,900.

To make the trim, an assistant football coaching position was eliminated as well as a half-time equipment manager’s position and the use of temporary help for event management.

Additional efforts are being made to cut administrative costs.

“We are scrutinizing overnight mail, copying, and long-distance phone calls,” said Debby de Angelis, Northridge’s business manager for athletics. “There aren’t as many pens and pencils.”

The soccer game programs won’t be on cardboard paper anymore, either. De Angelis is having the sports information department switch to cheaper paper programs.

“People are willing to cut back in the supply area to keep their jobs,” De Angelis said.

“We’ve actually put out a memo to the coaches asking them to use scratch paper, not printed stationery, for inter-office memos. These are the kinds of nickel-and-dime things that are going to keep us from losing employees and maintaining our scholarship level.”
