South Gate : Consultant Hired to Inspect Industrial Waste Discharges
- Share via
The City Council will hire a consultant to inspect local industrial plants that may be discharging illegal chemicals into the South Gate sewer system.
Unusual damage to the city’s sewer lines was discovered earlier this year after the city conducted a study in which video cameras were placed in the lines near industrial plants, said Jim Biery, director of public works.
As a result of the study, the council adopted an ordinance in August that allows the city to monitor industrial waste discharge and requires some users to purchase permits.
The council voted unanimously Monday to hire John L. Hunter and Associates Inc., a Santa Fe Springs consulting firm that provides similar services for the cities of Santa Fe Springs and Signal Hill. The consultant will be paid $24,000 from city funds and $22,000 from projected permit fees.
